How Long Should Your Novel Be? (word counts by genre, examples, tips & tools)

Not sure how long your novel should be? In today’s video I’ll show you some general targets for word-counts based on genre, with examples, and also discuss some tips to keep in mind when drafting, as well as how to find out the word count of published books.

To make it easier for you to find the genre you’re writing in, I’ve posted the genre specific ranges below. Remember that these are just general guidelines.

Middle Grade Fantasy: 40.000 – 80.000 words

YA Contemporary: 60.000 – 80.000 words

YA/SciFi Fantasy: 80.000 – 100.000 words (for debut novel, can be higher later on)

Epic/Adult Fantasy/Scifi: 90.000 – 250.000 (or more) words

Romance: 50.000 – 90.000 words

Thriller/Mystery: 70.000 – 150.000 words

Literary Fiction: 80.000 – 120.000 words

Historical Fiction: 100.000 – 150.000 words
